Augusta, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team, ranked 21st nationally, is currently sitting in a tie for first place after two rounds of the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational. The two-day event, featuring 15 collegiate teams, is being held at the par 72, 6,875-yard Forest Hills Golf Club. Wake Forest is tied with ACC-rival NC State for the team lead heading into Sunday's final round. The Deacons scorched the rest of the field with a 278 on Saturday's first round (the lowest team round of the day), but the Wolfpack posted a 279 in the second round, and the two schools are now even with a -13 under 563. Host Augusta State is in third place, two strokes behind with a 565. Wake freshman Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) is in a tie for second place individually with a 36-hole score of seven-under 137. Haas led the field after the first round, firing a 64 on the first 18 (the low round of the day), but turned in a 73 on the second 18 to drop into a three-way tie for second. Oliver Wilson of Augusta State leads the field with a nine-under 135 (70-65). Haas' round of 64 is the lowest score posted by a Wake Forest golfer since former Deacon Todd Lynch turned in a 63 in fall of 1996. Two other Deacons are currently sitting among the top 20 on the leaderboard. Junior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) turned in a pair of 71s on Saturday to finish the day in 14th place with a two-under 142. Sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) is one stroke back of his teammate, currently in a tie for 18th with a one-under 143 (73-70).
Other Wake Forest results include sophomore Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.), who is in a tie for 23rd with an even-par 144
(73-71), and sophomore Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio), who is tied for 29th with a one over 145 (70-75).
Wake Forest will be shooting for its second straight tournament victory on Sunday, when the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational concludes with final round action. |
