STATESBORO, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team finished second by two strokes at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, which took place at the par 72 Forest Heights Country Club. The Demon Deacons, who entered Sunday's final round in second, four strokes behind Augusta State, held on to its position by shooting a six-over par 294 as a team. WFU was able to make up two strokes on Augusta State, but ASU hung on to win the team title with a one-over par 865. The Deacs finished the two-day, 54-hole event with a three-over 867, North Carolina State, which entered the day in ninth place, was the only team to shoot par on Sunday's 18. The Wolfpack vaulted into third place in the final standings, four strokes back of Wake Forest. Fifteen teams - including nine of the top 21 teams in the nation in the latest rankings - participated in the invitational which was hosted by Georgia Southern. Wake Forest currently ranks third in the GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America) poll. Wake's finish marks the fourth time in eight events this season that the Deacs have finished first or second in the team standings. Junior Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio) posted the team's best finish, placing ninth with a one-over 217 (75-72-70). It was Yoder's best finish of the season and second career top-10 finish. Junior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) also finished among the top 20 on the leaderboard, placing 20th with a three-over 219 (75-70-74).
Senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) and junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) finished tied for 26th with a four-over 220. Morgan
completed the tournament with rounds of 75-72-73, while Wilfong posted Wake Forest's best score on Sunday, an even 72, and finished with a
74-74-72.
Deacon sophomore Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.), who entered the day in second place, struggled in the final round, shooting an 82. He finished tied for 34th with a six-over 222. The Wake Forest men's golf team returns to action on April 6-7, when it travels to Augusta, Ga. for the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational.
