TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's golf team recorded a 16-over-par 304 in the second and final round of play to finish seventh out of 16 teams at the Seminole Classic. The event, which was shortened from 54 holes to 36 holes due to rain, was contested on the 6,965-yard, par-72 course at the Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee.
No team shot below par and only two squads recorded sub-300 scores in a high-scoring final round today. South Carolina won the event with a 36-hole total of 585, or 9-over par, holding off NC State by one stroke. The Demon Deacons finished 18 strokes out of the lead with a total score of 603, or 27-over-par.
Senior Oscar Sanchez (Canary Island, Spain) recorded his first top 10 finish since his sophomore campaign, firing an even-par 72 on the final day to end up in a four-way tie for sixth place at 3-over par. Sanchez finished five strokes behind the individual medalist, South Carolina's Kyle Thompson (-2).
Senior Michael Capone (Cranston, RI) and sophomore Ryan Peiffer (Winston-Salem, NC) both finished tied for 31st place at 8-over par; Capone carded a 76 for the second straight day, while Peiffer posted a 75. Freshman Jay Morgan (Choctaw, OK) shot an 81 and dropped to 43rd place at 10-over, while sophomore Jamie Gallacher (Surrey, England) struggled with an 82 and placed 58th at 13-over.
The Deacs are next in action at the Chris Schenkel Intercollegiate in Statesboro, Ga., on March 27-28.
