Former Wake Forest quarterback James MacPherson will look to continue his outstanding play as he leads the Grand Rapids Rampage into the American Conference Championship of the Arena Football League playoffs Saturday, one game away from ArenaBowl XXII. After taking over the starting role in Week 4 for Grand Rapids MacPherson has been phenomenal, leading a Rampage team that was 3-10 before ending the regular season with three consecutive wins to squeak into the AFL playoffs. MacPherson, who was named the AFL Offensive Player of the Month for June and was selected three times as the AFL Offensive Player of the Week, will attempt to take an American Conference six seed to the ArenaBowl for the first time since the league went to its current playoff format in 2005. The Rampage will face the Western Division champion and defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats Saturday, July 12 for a spot in ArenaBowl XXII. The game will be televised at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN. The last time Grand Rapids advanced to the American Conference Championship was in 2001 when it went on to win ArenaBowl XV over the Nashville Kats. Grand Rapids shocked the league when it ousted top-seeded Chicago, 58-41 in a divisional round matchup one week ago. MacPherson set a team record with 33 completions on 39 attempts as he threw for 326 yards and six touchdowns. Heading into the final game of the season with a playoff berth on the line, MacPherson scored 10 touchdowns, throwing for seven and running for three, to lead the Rampage to an 86-70 win over New Orleans. In the Rampage's last five games, MacPherson has compiled a 131.8 passer rating, completed 74.7% of his passes (139-of-186) and thrown 33 touchdowns to only three interceptions. MacPherson won 11 games as a starter at Wake Forest from 2000 to 2002. MacPherson split time at quarterback with Anthony Young but still ended his career with the sixth-most wins and seventh-most passing yards (4,716) in Demon Deacon history.
