Spring Football Scrimmage is Won by "Gold" Team

WINSTON-SALEM -- Running back Morgan Kane ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gold team to a 21-14 win over the Black in Wake Forests 1998 Spring Game here Saturday night at Groves Stadium.

Kane, a junior from Ottawa, Ontario, carried 21 times and scored on a 41-yard run in the first quarter and on a four-yard plunge in the third period.

Gold quarterback Ben Sankey also enjoyed an excellent evening, completing all eight of his pass attempts for 85 yards.

Deacon starting quarterback Brian Kuklick started slowly, connecting on just three of his first 11 tosses, but recovered to complete 11 of 25 passes for 141 yards and a pair of TDs, both going to Desmond Clark. Clark, the ACCs leading receiver last fall with 72 receptions, scored on passes of three and 13 yards. He finished the night with six receptions for 45 yards.

Wideout William Merritt was also a productive receiver for the Black with five catches for 106 yards.

The offensive units for both teams had the better of the play early with three of the games first four possessions resulting in touchdowns.

The first of the those scores came on a 10-play, 62-yard drive by the Gold that ended on a two-yard plunge by 312-pound defensive tackle Fred Robbins, who was inserted into the game as a running back in the goal line situation.

Linebacker Kelvin Moses of the Gold squad was his teams leading tackler with seven unassisted stops. End Bryan Ray matched that number for the Black.
