Wake Forest Defeats Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Ben Sankey, playing for the injured Brian Kuklick, and Herman
Lewis each ran for a score and hooked up on a scoring pass to
lead Wake Forest to a 28-14 non-conference victory over winless
Rutgers.
Wake Forest (5-5) overcame the loss of Kuklick, who bruised his
knee last weekend in a loss to Clemson, behind Sankey and Lewis.
The Demon Deacons sent Rutgers (0-10) to its 13th straight loss.
The Scarlet Knights have not won since a 28-17 victory over
Temple on October 26th, 1996, and fell to 1-19 in their last 20
games.
Lewis got things started with a 16-yard scoring run 7:15 into
the game, giving Wake Forest a 7-0 lead. Sankey doubled the
lead with a one-yard touchdown plunge with 36 seconds left in
the period.
Matthew Burdick booted a 32-yard field goal with 10:54 left in
the first half as Wake Forest opened its biggest lead, 17-0.
Rutgers cut the deficit to three points before halftime behind
true freshman quarterback Mike McMahon, who threw a 12-yard
scoring pass to Andy Holland with 3:50 remaining and a 37-yard
scoring strike to Walter King eight seconds before the end of
the period.
Burdick kicked a 22-yard field goal with 1:16 left for the only
points of the third quarter as Wake Forest built the lead to
20-14, but it was Sankey's 15-yard TD pass to Lewis following a
blocked punt less than a minute later that sealed the game.
Sankey ran for the two-point conversion.
