A fearless factor on the front four of the Demon Deacon defense … after starting 32 of 33 games the past three seasons, now ready to emerge as one of the premier players at his position in the ACC … possesses the size, speed and mobility required to be a dominant player in the middle of the defensive line … timed at 4.8 in the 40 -- an excellent effort from a 300-lb man -- but quickness may be his biggest asset … was redshirted in 1995, then displayed flashes of his outstanding talents frequently the past three years … already ranks among the Wake Forest career leaders in tackles-for-loss (5th) and sacks (7th) … could move up to as high as second all-time in both categories this season … has prepared for this coming year with great dedication on and off the field, according to his coaches … very focused during the spring, enjoying perhaps his best offseason yet … did not, however, duplicate his Spring Game performance from 1998 when he scored on a two-yard plunge for the victorious White squad … probably won't score any TDs this fall either, but he's certain to make his presence felt in many other ways. 1998: Exceptionally consistent in the middle of the Deacon defensive line as an 11-game starter … collected five-or-more tackles eight times, and four-or-more in every game but one throughout a year in which he had to play an unusually large number of defensive snaps … on the field for 60-or-more plays in seven of the year's last eight outings, including the last five in a row … single game high of eight stops (7 solo) came versus North Carolina … credited with six hits in three separate contests, including NC State where he was a real force with a half dozen solo tackles, including two for negative yardage … had at least one tackle behind the line of scrimmage in each of the schedule's last five games … finished seventh on the team overall with his 56 stops on the year. 1997: Started every game at tackle … recorded six contests with four-or-more tackles, highlighted by an outstanding individual performance at Virginia … made six unassisted stops that afternoon, including a sack and two other TFLs which accounted for 10 negative yards for the Cavaliers … also a major factor in win over Maryland with four solo stops, including a pair of sacks for minus-15 yards … on his way to an outstanding effort against Clemson, too, with five unassisted tackles in first half alone before sustaining a sprained knee that sidelined him the second half … came back to make five hits the following week at Rutgers while still slowed with that injury … tied for the team lead in TFLs on the year (9) while finishing second in sacks (4) and quarterback pressures (7). 1996: Started 10 times (all but Clemson), participating in 40-or-more plays in each of those starts … very consistent with his productivity, contributing at least four tackles in nine contests … also spread his 11 tackles for losses out among eight different games … his best statistical outing came in season finale at NC State when he made seven stops (5 solo), including two behind the line of scrimmage … had played well the previous week versus Duke, too, with six hits (3 solo) and a sack … made two TFLs at Georgia Tech when he was on the field for a season-high 61 plays … his 11 negative-yardage stops led the team. BACKGROUND: Emerged as a major college prospect somewhat late in his high school career at Gonzalez High where he played for coach Sam McCorkel … totaled 83 tackles as a senior defensive lineman while also contributing 13 sacks and an impressive seven caused fumbles … also active on special teams, blocking two kicks … that performance earned him all-city and all-northwest Florida honors as a senior … served as team captain in 1994, too … lettered for three years with the Aggies and started as a junior and senior … played baseball for four years, starting three, as an outfielder and firstbaseman … stayed active away from sports as a volunteer speaker with the DARE program in area middle schools … his father Fred, Sr, who played collegiate basketball at Florida A&M, stands 6'9 … majoring in sociology … age 22 (born 3/25/77).
