Aug. 29, 2006 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Chris Paul's Winston-Salem Weekend will begin the second day of festivities with a youth basketball clinic at the West Forysth Family YMCA, the same place Paul honed his skills growing up, sponsored by the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets on September 16, 2006 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m ET. In his continued efforts to give back to the Winston-Salem community, Paul is also proud to announce the development of the "CP3 All-Stars", a youth basketball program that will provide children additional basketball opportunities similar to his own experiences growing up in Winston-Salem. Some of the NBA's current and retired players and coaches including Muggsy Bogues, Speedy Claxton, Dell Curry, Rudy Gay, Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser and New Orleans/Oklahoma City coach Byron Scott will be on hand to provide a truly memorable day of fun and basketball instruction. In addition to the NBA stars in attendance, former Wake Forest basketball player and current actor Marc Blucas will also serve as an instructor. A four-year letterman with the Demon Deacons, Blucas was named the Murray Greason Award winner as a senior, an honor voted on by the players for the individual who "sacrifices the most for the team." Blucas is best known for his role as Riley Finn in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" television series. The youth basketball clinic will host more than 150 children. The West Forysth Family YMCA and Winston-Salem Recreation & Parks Department are responsible for inviting and securing the participants. Those children in attendance will learn some the basic fundamentals and skills of basketball first hand from some of the top names in the game. The announcement of the "CP3 All-Stars" youth basketball program further establishes Paul's investment in youth basketball in the Winston-Salem area. Paul's father, Charles Paul, will serve as the Program Director of the "CP3 All-Stars" that plans to start with five age groups for boys: 11-under, 12-under, 14-under, 16-under and 17-under. Additional ages and a girls program are expected to be added in the future. Paul's roots in basketball began in the AAU program at age 11 as he was a member of the Carolina Hornets and the 17-under AAU National Champions Kappa Magic. The "CP3 All-Stars" plan to host an open gym later this year with times and dates to be announced in the future. "We are thrilled to develop a youth basketball program for the children of Winston-Salem and the rest of North Carolina," said Charles Paul. "The AAU system provided a solid foundation for Chris' basketball career and instilled in him a sense of competitiveness and teamwork at an early age and this is something we certainly want to give back to the community. We are in the early developmental stages of this program and will begin with the search for qualified coaches." Interested coaches can submit their resume to: CP3 All-Stars, PO Box 485, Lewisville, NC 27023. Since being drafted by the Hornets last year, Paul has left an indelible mark on the Winston-Salem community through his philanthropic endeavors and commitment to the game of basketball. Beginning in September of 2005, Paul has refurbished the basketball courts at Rupert Bell Recreation Center in honor of his late grandfather, Nathaniel Jones, and conducted a basketball clinic after the refurbishment ceremony. In addition to the upcoming clinic as part of "Chris Paul's Winston-Salem Weekend", he has also hosted successful basketball camps in Winston-Salem and Oklahoma City earlier this summer. The CP3 Foundation is a partnership with The Winston-Salem Foundation and serves as the focal point of Paul's hometown community activities. Chris Paul's Winston-Salem Weekend is The Foundation's first major initiative to raise funds for the Nathaniel Jones Scholarship Fund that is designed to award a Forsyth County student a scholarship to attend Wake Forest University in honor of his late grandfather.
