WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman guard Jeff Teague has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season and the second time in the past three weeks. Teague averaged 22.0 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game in Wake Forest's pair of wins last week. The Indianapolis native scored a game-high 26 points in leading the Deacons to an 86-73 upset of No. 2 Duke on Sunday. He went 7-for-15 from the floor, including a 3-for-3 mark from three-point range. Teague also made 9 of 13 from the free throw line, pulled down four boards and recorded two steals in 36 minutes of action. In Wake Forest's 78-70 win at Florida State on Thursday, Teague scored a team-high 18 points and dished out six assists. He went 9-for-10 from the free throw line, with all 10 attempts coming in the final five minutes of the game. On the week, Teague was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range and shot 78.3 percent (18-23) from the foul line. He was 11-for-26 (42.3 percent) from the floor. He had seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. On the season, Teague is second on the team with 12.8 points per game. He has been the Deacons' leading scorer in five of their past six games. Teague is one of four freshman in the ACC to win the conference's Rookie of the Week award multiple times this season, joining Duke's Kyle Singler (four times), NC State's J.J. Hickson (three times) and Virginia Tech's Jeff Allen (twice). Teague was previously named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 17 and Feb. 4. He is the first Demon Deacon since Chris Paul (five times) in 2003-04 to win Rookie of the Week multiple times. Teague is one of seven Deacons all-time to win the award three or more times. Teague is one of two Deacon freshmen--along with forward James Johnson--to win the award this year, making Wake Forest the only squad with multiple recipients. In program history, 33 Deacons have received the honor a total of 57 times.
Wake Forest is currently 16-8 overall and 6-5 in the ACC. The Deacons have surpassed last year's overall win total and conference win total. |
