Gold Takes Series Lead with 2-1 Win in Pitchers Dual
Adzick earns win with three scoreless innings

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Gold team pitching staff allowed just one run on five hits, while the Gold offense rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to claim a 2-1 win over the Black team in the Black & Gold World Series opener on Sunday afternoon.

Pitching was the story for both teams in the series lid lifter. For the Gold team, Austin Stadler, Ryan Bouton, Mark Adzick and Zach White combined to allow just one unearned run and five hits. The Black team pitching staff was nearly as good, only allowing two runs on seven hits.

Adzick earned the win for Gold, allowing two hits and striking out two in three scoreless innings of work. White pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.

Gabe Feldman suffered the loss for the Black team, giving up two runs on two hits, in 1 2/3 innings.

Stadler earned the start in the series opener for the Gold team and pitched well, throwing three innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and striking out a batter. Bouton also threw two scoreless innings in relief for Gold and struck out three.

Michael Dimock started for Black, hurling three scoreless frames, striking out four and giving up two hits. In relief, Brandon Johnson threw two shutout innings, while Ryan McGrath also had 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

Mac Wiliamson had a team-high two hits to lead Gold offensively. Mike Lubanski went 1-for-4 and had an RBI for gold, driving in the game-winning run in the seventh.

Casey Wadkins had a pair of hits and an RBI for the black team, while Patrick Blair, Jack Carey and Mark Rhine also recorded hits.

With Black leading 1-0 in the top of the seventh, the Gold team rallied for a pair of runs to claim the lead. After Bentley Heyman opened the inning with a groundout, Steven Brooks reached on an infield single and promptly stole second. A walk to Stadler put runners at first and second. A wild pitch from Feldman allowed Brooks to score the tying run all the way from second and moved Stadler to third. Lubanski followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Stadler and put Gold in front 2-1.

The Black team was able to muster a hit in both the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn't plate the tying run. White retired Black in order in the bottom of the ninth to give Gold the 2-1 victory in game one of the series.

Black opened the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the second. With one out, Matt Conway reached on an error by Heyman. Ryan Lloyd reached on an error by Trenton Langston to put runners at first and third with one out. Wadkins drove home Conway with a single down the left field line. Lloyd attempted to score from second but was thrown out by Williamson in left field to keep the score at 1-0.

The Gold team had good scoring chances in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, Langston led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Heyman. Dimock was able to get Brooks to fly out to center and Stadler to ground out to first to end the threat with no runs scoring.

Gold again created a scoring threat in the fourth frame. With one out, Williamson doubled down the left field line and Martin Kelly walked to put runners at first and second. After Taylor Kaprive flew out to left field, Kelly and Williamson executed a double steal to advance to second and third. Langston walked to load the bases. Johnson came in to relieve Dimock and forced Heyman to ground out to end the threat.

The Black & Gold World Series continues on Friday, October 30, with game two, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. All games of the series will be played at Wake Forest Baseball Park and are free and open to the public.
