WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former Wake Forest baseball standout Cory Sullivan is set to play in the 2007 World Series with the Colorado Rockies. Sullivan, a reserve outfielder, is in his third year in the majors with the Rockies. During the 2007 regular season, he played in 72 games and hit .286 with two home runs. Sullivan has played in 337 career games with Colorado, hitting .281 with eight homers and 24 stolen bases. Sullivan was a part of the Rockies' swift run through the National League Playoffs, playing in four games and going 1-for-3. Colorado swept the Philadelphia Phillies in the Divisional round and then swept the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS to advance to the franchise's first-ever World Series. The Rockies enter the Series having won 21 of their past 22 games, dating back to Sept. 16. Sullivan played for Wake Forest from 2000-01 before being drafted by the Rockies in the seventh round of the 2001 Amateur Draft. He was a two-time All-American and a two-time All-ACC selection. Sullivan led the Deacs to the 2001 ACC Championship, hitting two home runs and pitching eight innings in the title game. Sullivan is set to become the fifth Deacon to play in the World Series and the first since Tommy Gregg in 1991. Gregg, a first baseman and outfielder, played in four games of the 1991 World Series with the Atlanta Braves. Although the Braves fell to the Twins in seven games, Gregg was the first Deacon to see action in the Fall Classic in 34 years. Tommy Byrne, Rip Coleman and Ray Scarborough are the only other Deacs to play in the World Series. Byrne, a pitcher, saw the most extensive action, appearing in four different Series with the New York Yankees. Byrne won titles in 1949 and 1956, defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers in both. With Byrne, the Yankees fell to the Dodgers in 1955 and lost to the Milwaukee Braves in 1957. Byrne was a key member of the Yankees' 1955 team, starting two games in the Series. He went the distance in Game 2 to lead New York to a 4-2 win. However, Byrne started and took the loss in the Yankee's 2-0 defeat in Game 7.
Byrne started Game 3 of the 1949 World Series, helping New York to a 4-3 victory. He made one relief appearance in 1956 and two relief outings in 1957. Coleman pitched in one game out of the bullpen for the Yankees during the 1955 World Series. Scarborough appeared in one game in relief for the Yankees in 1952. New York won the Series, defeating the Dodgers in six games. Sullivan and the Rockies open the 2007 World Series against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. All of the games will be broadcast on FOX. |
