WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team plays its last two games before final exams this week when it hosts Davidson on Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m., and travels to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game. The Deacs, 20-23 overall on the season, will look to break a season-long, eight-game losing streak. Wake Forest is coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of Florida State last weekend. Junior catcher Mike Murray led the Deacs in the series against the Seminoles, hitting .625 during the three-game set with four RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. He finished the series strong, going 4-for-5 in the series finale. Freshman outfielder Micah Jarrett hit .500 against FSU with three runs scored. Fellow freshman Bentley Heyman recorded at least one hit in all three games and finished the series with a .308 batting average. For the season, Weldon Woodall leads Wake Forest with a .349 batting average. He also leads the team in hits (53), doubles (11) RBIs (36), slugging percentage (.579) and on-base percentage (.448). Steven Brooks is hitting .316 on the season with three round-trippers and 26 RBIs. Davidson enters Tuesday's game with a 17-21 record, but the Wildcats have posted an 11-10 mark in Southern Conference play. Davidson is currently riding a season-high, four-game winning streak after sweeping UNC Greensboro last weekend. The Wildcats are hitting .279 as a team, while the Davidson pitching staff has compiled a 6.66 ERA on the year. Danny Weiss leads the Wildcats with a .347 batting average on the season. He has six home runs on the year and driven in 32 runs, which ranks second on the team. Chase FitzPatrick has a team-high 12 home runs and 34 RBIs. He is hitting .322 on the year. Zach Kayne (.327) and Pat Brady (.301) also are batting over .300 on the season.
On the mound, Mike Frongello leads the team with 26 appearances, all out of the bullpen, on the season. Frongello is 3-1 with a 3.81 ERA and one save on the season. He has struck out 24 batters, while walking just eight in 35 1/3 innings. Matt Webb leads the Wildcats with five saves on the season in 16 appearances. He has 3-1 record and a 4.45 ERA. Wake claimed a dramatic 13-11 extra-inning victory over Davidson in the team's first meeting of the year at Davidson. Weldon Woodall hit a game-winning, two-run home run in the 11th to lift the Deacs to the win. Coastal Carolina is 32-12 on the season. After dropping four straight games, the Chanticleers came back to win two of three games at Presbyterian last weekend. Coastal has been tough to beat at home this season, posting a 20-3 record in Conway. As a team the Chanticleers are batting .329 on the season, while the Coastal pitchers have a combined ERA of 4.02. David Anderson is the offensive leader of the Chants, posting a .383 batting average and leading the team in home runs with 15 and RBIs with 36. Tyler Bortnick is hitting .381 on the season with nine round-trippers and 35 RBIs. Rico Noel (26) and Scott Woodward (21) each have over 20 stolen bases on the season. Nick McCully, the closer for Coastal Carolina, has made a team-high 22 appearances, with 21 of those in relief. McCully has eight saves on the season and has a 3-1 record with a 1.89 ERA. He has struck out 40 batters in 33 1/3 innings and opponents are hitting just .207 against him. Matt Rein has appeared in 20 games and has a perfect 3-0 mark with a 3.51 ERA. Coastal won the first meeting of the season 16-13 at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Chanticleers jumped out to a 15-2 lead after scoring 11 runs in the fourth inning. The Deacs got back in the game with six runs in the eighth, but fell short in their comeback bid. The Demon Deacons will start freshman righty Michael Dimock (3-3, 7.50) on Tuesday, while Davidson will counter with RHP Matt Sliwiak (3-0, 7.04). Garrett Bullock (1-2, 6.50) will start on Wednesday for Wake Forest. Coastal Carolina will send Austin Fleet (5-2, 4.25) to the mound.
