April 21, 2006 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 24 Wake Forest baseball team exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to fly past Maryland, 15-4, in the opening game of their ACC series Friday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. The Demon Deacons improve to 29-13 overall and 13-6 in the ACC, while the Terrapins drop to 17-24 and 6-16. With the game tied, 4-4, heading into the Wake Forest half of the eighth, the Deacs opened the flood gates. Sophomore Andy Goff gave the Deacons a 6-4 lead with a two-run single. Freshman Evan Ocheltree added another two-run single to push the lead to 8-4. Freshman Dustin Hood followed with an RBI single. After freshman Allan Dykstra was hit and junior All-American Matt Antonelli legged out an infield single, redshirt junior Brendan Enick greeted Joe Zaccaria with another two-run single and freshman Tyler Smith followed with a towering three-run home run giving Wake Forest a 14-4 lead. Goff added another single for his third RBI of the inning. In all, Wake Forest sent 16 to the plate and pounded out nine hits. The 11 runs are the most in a single-inning for the Demon Deacons since they plated 13 against Wofford on March 12, 2003. The inning is also the second largest by Wake Forest in an ACC game. The Deacons scored 12 runs in the first inning against Duke on April 6, 1988. Enick led the charge for Wake Forest. The designated hitter went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Ocheltree and Goff each added three hits and three RBI. Ocheltree, who batted in the leadoff spot for the first time in his career, has now registered three hits in each of his last four ACC games. Goff also scored a couple runs. Hood, Antonelli and redshirt junior Dan Rosaia chipped in with two hits apiece. Antonelli scored three runs, Hood had a run scored and two RBI, while Rosaia recorded a two-run single.
Senior Kyle Young (4-1) picked up the victory in relief. The righty tossed 3.0 scoreless innings. Young allowed just one hit and fanned a pair. The appearance was Young's 80th of his career and moved him past John Hendricks for fifth all-time in Wake Forest career history. Sophomore Brett Cecil (4-5) was charged with the loss for the Terps. The southpaw was rocked for eight earned runs on six hits in just 1.0 inning of work. Maryland starter Casey Baron did not factor in the decision, but pitched well. The lefty allowed three earned runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high five. Chad Durakis went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Maryland attack. Joe Palumbo added two hits and a run scored. Maryland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Wake Forest starting pitcher Brad Kledzik. Jordan Wilson doubled in a pair and Durakis followed with an RBI single. After allowing four hits over the first two innings, Kledzik settled down and kept the Terrapins off the scoreboard over the next five. The right-handed hurler did not allow a hit until Durakis' one-out single in the top of the sixth inning. Kledzik retired 11 of 13 batters over the stretch. He pitched into the seventh inning, but allowed a leadoff double to Palumbo and Nick Jowers followed with a single, but Young induced a double play and struck out Dan Melvin to limit the Terps to just one run. Kledzik scattered seven hits and surrendered four earned runs over 6.0+ innings. He struck out three and walked a pair. Kledzik has pitched at least 6.0 innings in five of his seven ACC starts. Wake Forest returns tomorrow afternoon with the second game of the weekend series. Sophomore Eric Niesen will get the start for the Demon Deacons.
