WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Freshman left-handed pitcher Ben Clayton (6-2) threw a no-hitter as the 22nd-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated the UNC Greensboro Spartans 14-0 at Hooks Stadium on Wednesday. Clayton's no-hitter was the first by a Wake Forest pitcher since Mike MacDougal no-hit Duke on March 12, 1999. Wake Forest scored a run in the top of the first to grab the early lead. Wake added two runs in the third to make the score 3-0. The Deacs scored three runs in the fifth, five in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to make the final score 14-0. At the plate, Wake was led by short stop Chase Voshell who went 4-for-5 with five RBI. First baseman Jamie Athas went 3-for-4 with three RBI and second baseman Jason Aquilante went 3-for-5 with two RBI. In the game, Clayton faced just 31 batters. He walked four batters and struck out a career-high 13. Darin Phalines (1-2) pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up six runs on 10 hits to take the loss for the Spartans. With the win, Wake improves to 18-7, while UNC Greensboro drops to
18-7. Wake plays again Thursday night when they travel to Liberty to take
on the Flames. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
