Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Dustin Hood and redshirt junior Brendan Enick each had three hits to lead No. 25 Wake Forest past Boston College, 11-4, in the second game of their ACC series at Hooks Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Demon Deacons improve to 16-5 overall and 3-2 in the ACC, while the Eagles drop to 9-8 and 0-5.

After Boston College drew within one run, 4-3, the Deacons added an insurance run in the seventh on Enick's clutch two-out RBI single. The designated hitter then capped off a six-run eighth inning explosion with a solo home run giving Wake Forest an 11-3 lead.

Enick went 3-for-5 with three RBI. The home run was his third of the season and eighth of his career. Hood also went 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI, while sophomore Austin Jones, junior Brian Shust and sophomore Andy Goff had two hits apiece. Jones went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Shust went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and RBI, while Goff went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior All-American Matt Antonelli added a two-run single and freshman Allan Dykstra went 1-for-2 with two walks, a sacrifice fly and run scored.

Wake Forest starting pitcher Charlie Mellies (4-1) picked up the victory. The right-handed hurler tossed 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits. Mellies struck out six and walked two. Mellies has worked into the sixth inning in four consecutive starts.

Sophomore Eric Niesen tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief before fellow sophomore Ben Hunter worked the final 2.0 innings to pick up his sixth save of the season. Hunter allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out one. He has now tossed 17.2 innings in 2006 and has yet to surrender an earned run.

Dan Houston (1-2) was charged with the loss for Boston College. Houston allowed four runs over the first three innings, but managed to work into the seventh inning. He pitched 6.1 innings and yielded five runs, all earned, on 10 hits. Houston struck out two and walked two.

The Demon Deacons grabbed a first inning 2-0 lead for the second straight day. Jones, who opened the first inning with a single yesterday, did the same Saturday. Hood followed with a single to put runners at first and second with no outs. After Hood was retired on Antonelli's fielder's choice and Dykstra walked, Enick singled in Jones and redshirt junior Dan Rosaia drove in the second run of the inning with a fielder's choice.

Wake Forest pushed the lead to 4-0 with single runs in the second and third inning. Hood picked up an RBI single in the second before junior Brian Shust ripped an RBI double in the third.

Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow afternoon with the final game of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Senior Kip Byrum will take the hill for the Demon Deacons.
