Wake Forest improves to 9-3 on the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest scored 15 runs in the first three innings
and sophomore Eric Schmitt pitched six strong innings to lead the Demon
Deacons to a 18-0 victory over visiting New York Tech on Sunday afternoon at
Hooks Stadium. With the victory, Wake Forest improved their season record to
9-3 while the Bears fell to 1-2.
Schmitt (2-1) pitched six shutout innings and allowed only two hits while
retiring 18 of 21 batters he faced. He struck out eight while walking none
and did not allow a runner to reach second base. Scott Siemon and Peter
Princi teamed to pitch three scoreless innings in relief to preserve the
shutout. Doug Stasio (0-1) started and took the loss for New York Tech, allowing 10
runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Wake Forest put six runs on the board in the botom of the first inning,
highlighted by a two-run home run from Andrew Riepe. Will Rikard and Danny
Borrell both drove in two runs in the inning with doubles.
The Deacs added nine runs in the third, all coming after two outs in the
inning. Wake Forest sent 14 batters to the plate during the frame, with
Borrell,s three-run double capping the scoring. Borrell, a freshman from
Sanford, NC, finished the afternoon with two doubles and five RBI while also
scoring three runs.
Jon Palmieri added a two-run homer in the fourth inning and then drove home
a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Jason Aquilante went 2-for-3 with
two RBI, while Riepe finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Wake Forest scored 18 runs on only eight hits, but New York Tech pitchers
combined to walk 13 batters on the day.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Tuesday when they host Campbell and
then face Virginia Commonwealth on Wednesday. Both contests are at Hooks
Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in each game.
